Foundation of Circular Economy
This module introduces participants to the fundamental concepts of the circular economy and its growing importance in building resilient, competitive, and sustainable businesses. Participants will explore how the traditional linear economy differs from the circular economy, using practical examples from the Zambian context to illustrate how businesses are already creating value through circular practices.
The session will cover the three core principles of the circular economy—designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems—and demonstrate how these principles can be integrated into everyday business operations. Participants will also be introduced to the 10Rs Framework, learning how strategies such as Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Refurbish, Remanufacture, Repurpose, Recycle, and Recover preserve value at different levels and support sustainable resource management.
In addition, the module will explain the distinction between the biological and technical cycles, emphasizing the importance of keeping these material streams separate to maximize resource efficiency and minimize waste. Finally, participants will identify practical circular economy opportunities within Zambia’s economy and explore how their own businesses can contribute to and benefit from the country’s transition towards a more circular and sustainable future.
By the end of this lesson, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate between the linear and circular economy using real-world Zambian examples.
- Explain the three founding principles of the circular economy.
- Apply the 10Rs framework to evaluate and improve business practices.
- Distinguish between biological and technical material cycles and understand the “never mix” principle.
- Identify circular economy opportunities relevant to their business and the wider Zambian economy.
