EU Taxonomy & the 6 Environmental Objectives
This session introduces participants to the fundamentals of the circular economy and the EU Taxonomy for Sustainable Activities, a globally recognized framework that is increasingly shaping sustainable finance and investment decisions. Participants will gain an understanding of how circular economy principles align with environmental sustainability and why the EU Taxonomy is becoming an important consideration for businesses seeking access to international markets, investors, and EU-linked funding opportunities.
The lesson explores the six environmental objectives of the EU Taxonomy, illustrating each with practical examples from Zambia’s circular economy sectors. Participants will also learn how to assess whether their business activities contribute to environmental sustainability by applying the Taxonomy’s three key principles: Substantial Contribution, Do No Significant Harm (DNSH), and Minimum Safeguards.
Through practical demonstrations, participants will be introduced to the EU Taxonomy Compass, enabling them to determine whether their business activities are Taxonomy-eligible. The session concludes by examining the key Taxonomy performance indicators (KPIs) used to measure sustainability performance and how these indicators will be integrated into the GreenScale Zambia programme to monitor enterprise progress and investment readiness.
By the end of this lesson, participants will have a clear understanding of how internationally recognized sustainability frameworks can strengthen their businesses, improve compliance, enhance investor confidence, and position them for growth within the circular economy.
