Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)
This lesson introduces Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles and demonstrates their growing importance for Zambian SMEs seeking EU, international and green financing opportunities. Participants will explore the three pillars of ESG and identify practical indicators that are relevant to circular economy businesses, from resource efficiency and waste management to employee wellbeing, governance and stakeholder engagement.
Through a practical 15-indicator ESG self-assessment, participants will evaluate their current performance, identify areas for improvement and develop a simple ESG policy statement. The lesson also covers how to communicate ESG commitments effectively to stakeholders and how ESG performance can influence GREENTech4CE assessment, scoring and post-grant reporting requirements.
By the end of the lesson, participants will be able to:
- Define ESG and explain its relevance to Zambian SMEs seeking international and EU funding.
- Understand the three ESG pillars and identify relevant indicators for circular businesses.
- Conduct a 15-indicator ESG self-assessment of their business.
- Develop a simple ESG policy statement and stakeholder communication approach.
